We visit the picturesque market town of Helmsley this morning, with its historic market. Famous for its independent boutiques and traditional Friday market along with Helmsley Castle and the Walled Garden and award-winning dining, it serves as the official starting point for the 109-mile Cleveland Way hiking trail.

Helmsley Castle: Unlock 900 years of history at this formidable medieval fortress that transitioned from an Elizabethan mansion to a romantic Georgian ruin.

Helmsley Walled Garden: A stunning, five-acre historic garden nestled at the foot of the castle, famous for its inspiring floral displays and as a filming location for The Secret Garden.

Local Market: Head to the vibrant Market Place on Fridays to shop for local Yorkshire produce, crafts, and antiques.

This afternoon we make our way to the pretty little village of Lastingham (approx. 20 minutes from Helmsley) where we have included a 1-course (main course) lunch at the pretty country pub The Blacksmiths Arms in Lastingham.   

Lastingham has an historic monastery, which is now the Church of St Mary, and attracts many visitors due to its rare Norman architecture and crypt with an apsidal chancel. The present church also houses a war memorial commemorating soldiers from Lastingham and Spaunton who served in the First World War.
