Skipton on Market Day
Skipton
Come and visit the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Skipton, once known as Sheep Town, due to its woollen mills and its farmers market is now a lovely little market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, Skipton is a beautiful market town on the River Aire and the Leeds & Liverpool Canal,
The town market is held four days a week Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The market was granted a royal charter by King John back in the medieval times to hold a Fayre (market) four times a week and this still remains in place today. The market is all the way down the main High Street with Skipton Castle at the head of the High Street. Skipton Castle has been a Norman Stronghold and dates back to the 11th Century, and is a prime example of well over 900 years of history.
Skipton Castle is a well-preserved Grade 1 listed building in Skipton. It is one of the best preserved medieval castles in England. It was built in 1090 by Robert de Romille, a Norman Baron and is now a tourist attraction and private residence. It is located at the north end of Skipton's High Street. During the English Civil War, the castle was the last Royalist stronghold in the north of England to surrender.
