History of the build of Castle Howard
The 3rd Earl of Carlisle enlisted the help of his friend John Vanbrugh. Vanbrugh, having never built anything before, recruited Nicholas Hawksmoor to assist him in the practical side of design and construction and between 1699 and 1702 the design evolved. Built from east to west, the house took shape in just under ten years.
However, at the time of Vanbrugh’s death in 1726 the house was incomplete; it lacked a west wing as attention had turned to landscaping the gardens. It was still incomplete when the 3rd Earl died in 1738. Little could both men have guessed that, when the house came to be completed by Carlisle’s son-in-law Sir Thomas Robinson, Vanbrugh’s flamboyant baroque design would be brought back down to earth by the 4th Earl’s conservative Palladian wing.
The Christmas Theme this year is a Dickens of a Christmas. This Victorian extravaganza will leave you full to the brim with festive cheer! Charles Dickens’ classic novels are brought to life in grand Christmas style, leaping off the page with projections, soundscapes, and theatrical surprises. As the cold nights draw in, warm your hands and hearts by the grand roaring fire and encounter familiar faces from Dickens' most treasured novels, including Ebenezer Scrooge and a ghost or two. Rich in nostalgia, storytelling and Christmas spirit, it's an immersive journey that celebrates Christmas magic.
Following the award-winning success of Christmas at Castle Howard with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Alice's Christmas Wonderland, CLW Event Design Event Design have designed this years A Dickens of a Christmas and it is sure to be a fantastic, if spooky, day out!
