Beamish - Living Museum of the North
Beamish - Living Museum of the North Beamish is a world famous open air museum which brings the history of North East England to life at its 1820s Pockerley, 1900s Town, 1900s Pit Village, 1940s Farm, 1950s Town and 1950s Spain’s Field Farm exhibit areas. Visitors to the museum meet costumed folk and discover fascinating stories of everyday life in the region through time.
Take a walk down an Edwardian cobbled street, try tasty food from times gone by and chat to our cheerful costumed engagers – there’s so much to discover! Experience life as a Land Girl, explore the 1820s Landscape or have a go at fun 50s activities in the welfare hall. Set within 400 beautiful acres, there’s something for everyone at Beamish Museum. With tram rides and historic bus rides through the town or if you feel fit and active you may walk around and visit the old-traditional sweet shops, food eateries, traditional fish & chips and original toy stores to name but a few.
Visitors can enjoy an ice cream and other traditional treats while listening to 50s tunes on the jukebox at John’s Café, a recreation of the popular café from Wingate in County Durham. The café was owned by Giovanni Baptista Parisella, known locally as John, who was of Italian descent. The menu includes ice cream made in the café, as well as other 1950s favourites including hot Bovril and hot Vimto.
Visitors can look the part by getting a 1950s hairstyle in Elizabeth’s Hairdresser’s, and take their photo under dryers from Beamish’s collection. Elizabeth’s is based on an end-terrace shop from Bow Street in Middlesbrough. Visitors can book an appointment at the salon on the day of their visit on a first come, first served basis, and cost £5.
