Northumberland Historic Places - Lots of Singles

Northumbria's Historic Places
Discover romantic villages, barely-visited beaches, pretty little market towns, seaside hidden bays and books to delight the most avid reader and enjoy endless experiences. Northumberland is best known for its rich historical heritage and stunning natural landscapes.   Due to its location at the frontier between England and Scotland, Northumberland boasts a uniquely rich and intricate history, including the Border Wars. This history is still visible today, with over 70 castle sites still standing – more than any other county in England

Alnwick is like stepping into a fairytale town.   Just a short walk through Alnwick’s winding cobbled streets and past the archway of Bondgate Without, the only remaining chunk of the town walls, will take you to Barter Books, the largest second hand book shop in the UK.  Settle into an armchair by the open fire and grab yourself a coffee as you immerse yourself in the literary world while toy trains chug above you.  There is also Alnwick Market, which is held every Thursday and Saturday. The market takes place in the town's market place.

Hexham
Hexham is a small market town built with some of  buildings made from the remains of Hadrians Wall with more than 1,300 years of history, outstanding architecture and easy access to some the most beautiful scenery.  Hexham has some lovely buildings including Hexham Abbey, which was founded in 674 in the centre of this market town. Its Saxon crypt, constructed partly from stone taken from nearby Roman forts is among the oldest intact structures in Britain.  The abbey survived Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries.  Hexham Old Gaol, dating to 1333 is recognised as the first purpose-built prison in England. Built using stone from the Roman site at Corbridge, the gaol now operates as a heritage museum. Hexham sits at the centre of Hadrian’s Wall Country.  Hexham Farmers’ Market takes place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month and is well regarded for its local and regional produce. Hexham has been used in many a t.v show such as Vera and is home to the Actor Robson Green.

Seahouses & Lindisfarne (Holy Island)
Nestled along the breathtaking Northumberland Coast, Seahouses is a picturesque village that captures the heart of every travelerKnown as the Gateway to the Farne Islands, Seahouses is a colourful fishing village on the coast of Northumberland between Bamburgh and Alnwick.  As you wander through the village, you'll be struck by the charming architecture, quaint shops, and welcoming atmosphere.

Richmond is located at the point where Swaledale meets the upper valley of the River Swale.  Visitors can explore ancient ruins and riverside walks that lead to peaceful spots perfect for reflection or photography. The river itself is a draw for walkers and nature lovers, with trails that pass waterfalls, woodlands and open meadows.  Richmond is also home to museums, such as the Green Howard Museum and cultural spaces that celebrate local history and creativity. You’ll find exhibitions and galleries tucked into beautiful old buildings, offering insight into the town’s past and present with Richmond's cobbled town square and Richmond Castle all within walking distance and a selection of shops, stalls and eating establishments.  Richmond is definitely one of Yorkshire's prettiest towns.
