This history is still visible today, with over 70 castle sites still standing – more than any other county in England

Durham.  Immerse yourself in history as you discover Durham - a magnificent medieval city and landscape dotted with castles, museums and spectacular natural landmarks.  It's a beautiful, historic city with a unique atmosphere, making it a great destination for tourists from all parts of the world. Highlights include Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as the pretty River Wear, charming cobbled streets, and vibrant city centre with shops, cafes galore.

Bamburgh is often cited as Northumberland's prettiest village, famed for its dramatic castle and expansive sandy beach along with the incredibly interesting Grace Darling Museum.   Bamburgh Castle is owned by the Armstrong family, specifically Francis Watson-Armstrong.  He is the fifth generation of the Armstrong family to be custodians of the castle. The castle has been in the Armstrong family's possession since it was purchased by William Armstrong in 1894. 

Visiting Alnwick is like stepping into a fairytale town.   Just a short walk through Alnwick’s winding cobbled streets and past the archway of Bondgate Without, the only remaining chunk of the town walls, will take you to Barter Books, the largest second hand book shop in the UK.  Settle into an armchair by the open fire and grab yourself a coffee as you immerse yourself in the literary world while toy trains chug above you.  There is also Alnwick Market, which is held every Thursday and Saturday. The market takes place in the town's market place. 

Amble is a coastal town known as the friendliest port with a working harbour overlooking coquet island where you can get boat trips to and from.   It's located at the mouth of the River Coquet and is a gateway to the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town is popular with tourists, offering attractions like Coquet Island's seabird colony, a busy fishing harbor, and a vibrant high street.

The White Swan Hotel is a charming 300 year old coaching inn, set in the heart of the historic market town of Alnwick, situated on Bondgate Within this hotel is a stones throw away from Alnwick Castle and Gardens.  With its decor direct from the Titanic's sister ship the Olympic and its Olympus Restaurant with its beautiful architecture this is a lovely historic building along with Hardys Bar where you can sit and relax with a drink in hand or go for a wander through the walled arch to Bondgate Without and make your way to the largest second hand book shop in the UK Barter Books where you can easily wile away a few hours or more.
